wat u talking bout
Maybe when I said grammar wasn't as important it's because I haven't seen a blog in a school environment. Perhaps if the teacher were to stress the importance of it, then students might do it. I just know that when students send me e-mail or post anything on-line it is horrible. It almost seems as if the internet has given them the okay to be lazy. I do not agree with this, but I see it creepy into classwork all the time. The abbreviations used for texts or while on-line chatting seem to find their ways into my classroom. I just think it would be hard to instill in them the importance of sounded educated on-line. I think they get it when they write a paper (most of them do anyway) but on-line is a whole new beast.

I agree, and I see it from my students all the time, and I slam them for it. I write back very harsh letters and post exposing the language and lack of formality as horrible. I let them know that they are talking to a professional and they need to talk as professionals. It only take a few combative run ins for the behavior to change for most students. It seems to me that my students are just waiting to be held accountable for their online actions, and once the standard is set, they meet or exceed it.
ReplyDeleteI see it too at fifth grade. I'm trying to get my students ready for the writing SOL and I see some of the worst habits. The way they talk and the way they write definitely shows they want an easy way out. Have you seen the movie Idiocracy? Wow! It's scary to think that could ever happen. See it if you haven't yet.
