Podcasts vrs Radio

I'm trying to wrap my head around the difference between a podcast and a radio broadcast. Especially since in class we were shown examples of pod casts of NPR. Isn't that just the radio show broken into downloadable segments? All shows have their intro and outro music, they usually have the same people doing the show and in the same format. It almost seems like this is not a new technology. Anyone who had a tape recorder could record the radio and play it later. It just seems to offer a convenience so people can listen to something at anytime.

  1. I was going to write the same exact thing (or close to it.) I'm so glad someone else was thinking the same thing as me. I'm still having a hard time getting my head around a podcast too. I hope it be comes clearer soon.

  2. I think you are right, podcast = radio. The difference is the delivery method. The format of a podcast, just like a radio show varies dramatically. Talk show, documentary, drama, news, etc. I guess how "it" is delivered is not nearly as important as what you are delivering.

  3. From my understanding, Podcasts were named because they are a form of radio on a non-radio device (IPods). So really, a podcast is radio...I know that NPR podcasts most (if not all) of their shows so that listeners who cannot use the radio all day at work can listen to them later.

  4. You are right that anybody could record a radio show on a tape player and play it later. The difference does lie in the convenience factor and the abilty to open your audience to he world. I regularly download podcasts of favorite radio shows back home on the BBC which would have been impossible just a dew years ago.

The difference is that the listener does not have to record the show in real time or while it is being broadcast. The use of subscribtions and RSS feeds allow listeners to get the latest show automatically and listen to them when they like.

Another confusing factor about podcasts and radio shows is the fact that so many radio stations are offering podcasts of their shows. However, we need to remember that there are many more podcasts out there created by individuals who wish to just share the opinions or expertise on a subject.

The difference is that podcasts do not have to be record
